The Five Liberal Solutions to Gun Violence you Should Know
With mass shootings in the news periodically, it’s no wonder liberals are addressing gun control and Second Amendment rights on the campaign trail. Five main solutions to gun violence are being endorsed, and each Democratic candidate is promoting one or more of these solutions as a part of their political platform. Below are the five liberal solutions to gun violence you should know.
Banning assault weapons
Most candidates in the liberal party can agree on a baseline, common-sense solution to gun control: banning semi-automatic assault weapons. These guns are used for violence, not sport, and can cause a large number of fatalities in a short amount of time. Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, and Amy Klobuchar are among the candidates for whom banning assault weapons is a campaign platform.
Universal background checks
Requiring gun sellers to perform background checks is another solution to gun violence espoused by many of the candidates, though some favor universal background checks and others favor only expanded background checks. Bernie Sanders, Cory Booker, Andrew Yang, and Amy Klobuchar support universal background checks, while Kamala Harris, Beto O’Rourke, and Elizabeth Warren support expanded or near-universal background checks.
Federal buyback programs
A less commonly-supported idea for curbing gun violence is instituting a national buyback program, which would incentivize voluntary surrender of privately-owned firearms without risk of prosecution. Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders Julian Castro, and Beto O’Rourke have all voiced support for a buyback program.
Pressuring private industry
Passing laws is not the only way to reduce gun violence. Private companies from gun manufacturers to retail sales outlets to financial institutions have some control over the future of Second Amendment rights in America, and several liberal candidates favor pressuring these companies to adopt more responsible practices and act as watchdogs. This is a central piece of Beto O’Rourke’s gun reform policy, and is also a part of Elizabeth Warren’s approach.
Perhaps the most ambitious and sweeping gun control idea liberals are campaigning on this year is the idea of federal licensing for gun owners. This is central to Cory Booker’s gun policy plans, as well as Elizabeth Warren’s, Julian Casto’s, Pete Buttigieg’s, and Beto O’Rourke’s.
The future for gun owners
For law-abiding citizens who keep and use guns for sport and self-defense, none of the proposed liberal solutions to gun violence will present a challenge. But for many Americans, the Second Amendment is sacred, and even common-sense gun laws are seen as a threat to liberty. As the country continues to grapple with the issues of gun control and safety, seeing how the liberal candidates’ ideas on gun policy are received by voters may give us a clue to what the future will look like for gun owners.
