Liberals React to Trump’s COVID-19 Deception
Reporters recently learned that President Trump downplayed the danger of COVID-19 earlier this year, and yet again after his recovery from the illness himself. This revelation follows the release of a recorded interview that reveals how much he knew in February, ahead of the general public. Liberals and the public at large have reacted with outrage to Trump’s COVID-19 deception.
Trump’s deception laid bare
In the interview recording, President Trump acknowledged that COVID-19 is deadlier than “strenuous” flus.
But for weeks after this statement, he dismissed the virus’s severity in public briefings and said the virus is like the flu. He also noted that it spreads through the air, making it harder than control than a virus that only transfers by touch.
Trump was asked by the media to explain the remarks when the recordings came out. He claimed he was trying to reduce panic by downplaying the danger of the virus.
Prominent liberals decry Trump’s betrayal
Liberals and the public at large are reacting by expressing outrage over the deception. Many are commenting on the cruelty and the incredibly dire consequences of Trump’s actions.
Joe Biden’s Twitter reaction to the news of Trump’s deception notes the length of the betrayal. “He lied to us for months….It was a life or death betrayal of the American people.”
Dan Rather, a prominent liberal voice in journalism, notes through a Tweet that Trump’s betrayal has caused tens of thousands of deaths. Trump’s deception has resulted in, he says, “tens of thousands of dead Americans who experts say didn’t need to die.”
Senator Elizabeth Warren reacted with a more personal attack. She Tweeted, “…the President of the United States is more concerned with his headlines and poll numbers than the health and safety of our families, friends, and neighbors.” Her reaction mirrors the anger of many other Americans.
Accountability for Trump
Most public health experts agree that Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic has been poor. The revelation that he was dishonest with the American public and caused more deaths than necessary adds salt to the wound.
As liberals and Americans react to the President’s deception, accountability will surely be part of the conversation.
